Tikal is located in Guatemala in the center of the department of Peten, which is 50 miles northwest of the Belize border. We often cater to guests interested in taking a full day trip to Tikal, and we will work with you to make sure you have an action-packed day that will get you back to Belize in a reasonable time frame. Once one the largest and most important Mayan cities during its peak, Tikal National Park remains a huge attraction for visitors coming to Central America. Located in the Petén area of Guatemala, Tikal is renowned for its incredible setting, deep in a large jungle, as well as its immaculately excavated temples. The site is so large that many of its temples are still being uncovered by archaeologists, so some visitors may be able to see excavators hard at work. Tikal was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and this is among many reasons for its popularity today. While Tikal is very popular among tourists, it is not as overrun with visitors as other Mayan sites such as Chichen Itza. Also, the remoteness of Tikal allows for more room for visitors and tour groups to spread out in, so Tikal rarely feels overly crowded.
