This road crosses two national parks: the Lanín and the Nahuel Huapi.

The lakes that give name to the road, in order from San Martin de los Andes to Villa la Angostura, are: Lácar, Machónico, Falkner, Villarino, Lago Escondido, Correntoso, Espejo, Nahuel Huapi, although this last lake is not part of the "7 lakes".

It was built by architect Alejandro Bustillo in 1942 at the request of Mrs. Sara Log of Demaría. Its name refers to the tenth month of the year in the old French calendar that had established the French Revolution and means a month of gold in allusion to the spikes that radiate a golden tone at that time of year.
