Various etymologies have been proposed for the name "El Tatio", which might mean "oven" or "grandfather". It is the third-largest geyser field in the world and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Machuca town is one of the most remote places in Chile, populated only by 20 small houses and a church that seems to make us go back in time. It is in the middle of hills with an own landscape of the Chilean high plateau on the 4.000 msnm.
The main activity of those who live in Machuca is the grazing of llamas and the care of them, in addition to the tourist activity with local handicrafts. You can try some delicious anticuchos of llama or alpaca meat, empanadas and sopaipillas valued for their large size.
For those who visit Machuca, they can see alpacas, ducks, gulls and flamingos on the way. All of them feeding on a leafy bofedal that accompanies the town.
The church is the most attractive of Machucha. Of white color, whose doors and windows are of intense blue color and from the ceiling the brave straw falls, very typical product of the Chilean high plateau, without a doubt, a marvel to visit in the north of Chile.
