About this activity
Belize City Tour is an enriching tour which offers cultural diversity as you see people of various ethnic backgrounds. Learn about our melting pot of races and about our British Colonial past. The city is divided into the north and south side by three bridges. On the north side of the city is where the affluent people live. You will see a blend of modern homes, condominiums, colonial houses, five star hotels and historical sites. The south side gives you a feel of where the working class live, Saint Johns Cathedral being the oldest Cathedral in all of Central America, Government House, Supreme Court and downtown Belize City. The city is said to have built on mahogany chips and rum bottles during the logging days as the city is built on swamp land filled with mangroves. Altun Ha is only an hour drive from Belize City, where rituals were conducted celebrating important events, recording of time, and where the most spectacular discovery was made. The name Altun Ha is literally “Rockstone Pond or to Rockstone Water” . Within one of the temples known as temple A-1, a tomb was found called the Green Tomb with nearly 300 Jade objects. Among other valuables were discovered the remains of a Codex, an Ancient book where the Mayas wrote their important events made from the bark of fig trees. The most imposing building at Altun Ha is structure B-4 , the Temple of the Masonary Altars standing 54 feet above the plaza. Inside was the body of an elderly priest with several spectacular Jade objects, including a carved Jade head of the Sun God, Kinich Ahau, which stands 14.9 cm high and weighs 9.75 lbs. This Jade head is the largest carved jade object in the Maya area.
