Mt Teide Crater Hike with Cable Car Ride

About this activity
Start with a pickup from your hotel in north or south Tenerife, and then travel by air-conditioned vehicle to Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounding Mt Teide volcano in the heart of the island.

Take in the sights as you journey through the forested La Orotava area or the lunar landscape of Vilaflor (depending on where your hotel is situated), and then, as your vehicle ascends the side of Mt Teide, listen to your expert guide share interesting facts and anecdotes about the still-active volcano.

After traveling to a height of around 7,730 feet (2,356 meters), grab your camera and hop out of your transfer vehicle. Spend a few moments soaking up the views and snapping photos, then board the cable car (own expense) with your guide and group. During your 8-minute ride, creep further up Mt Teide and be wowed by island panoramas and sweeping views of the expansive Las Cañadas Caldera below.

On arrival at the upper cable car station, which sits at a dizzying 11,663 feet, set off on your hike to the Mt Teide crater — the highest point of Spain. With your guide leading the way along the well-worn trail, admire the craggy landscape of weather-beaten rock formations, rivers of petrified lava and vibrant wild flowers.

After roughly an hour of hiking, arrive at the Mt Teide crater. Wander around the extinct crater and be rewarded with jaw-dropping views of Tenerife and the Canary Islands. When the time comes, return to your air-conditioned vehicle and journey back to your hotel.

Please note: In the event of unfavorable weather conditions and the closure of the cable car, the tour will follow an alternate route.

Me and my boyfriend took this tour in June and it was a great experience! However it should be made clearer that you will need to bring ID with you as we were nearly caught out by this. The tour was largely targeted at German tourists and as a result the tour guide on the coach spoke only in German. There was around 4-5 of us who were English speakers and had to sit close to the English guide instead. Climbing to the top of Teide was a tough but awesome experience and I would highly recommend it to everyone who is able! Me and my boyfriend are not experienced hikers like some of those on the tour but we still made it to the top :

A really great day out. Both guild on tour and guild on volcano very good. we were a little unsure what we had booked. may need to inform people more about the climb to the top My wife was struggling with the breathing at height. guild was very good and kept a eye on her and advised her when she was struggling. In all a wonderful day.

The Mt Teide Crater Hike with Cable Car Ride 6941HIKE excursion name is a little misleading as the cost 52.25 did not include the Cable Car Ride which is an extra 27 Euro per person. However the day was a very unique experience for me and I enjoyed it very much. Was it worth the total cost of 79.25? Yes it was, though it was less value than the La Gomera excursion which included a very nice lunch at cost of 63. The trip from El Medano my resort to the Cable Car Station, took about one hour. Unfortunately and this nearly ruined the whole trip, the return journey took just over three hours, even though the company Volcano Teide Experience told us that they were arranging transport that would make the return journey as short as possible for everyone. The reason the return journey took so long was that the bus had to stop at about 10 hotels from Puerto de Santiago to El Medano, and alas, mine was the last on the list. Thank God I went to the toilet before we departed Teide Cable Car station. The company should have used two smaller busses rather than one large bus for the return journey. I left El Medano at 8am and got to the Cable car station about 09:10. Stephanie was our driver and she was wonderful. Very chatty and very informative about the area. Once we got to the cable car station she handed us over to our guide for the day. Unfortunately I have forgotten his name because it was difficult to pronounce however he was an excellent guide, very informative and passionate about the area. He guided around in English, German and Spanish. The cable car ride for me was terrifying. I had to keep my eyes closed for the full 8 minute ascent. Fortunately for the descent, I was much braver and even videod part of that journey. It was a wonderful experience. Once you get to the upper Cable car station you must then present your ID passport or driving licence to the person at the entry point to the Teide Peak. Your guide will do this for you if you have booked with an organised tour. If your name is not on the list you will not be allowed to climb the final 200 metres to the summit. What you are allowed do is take a trek around a track at this lower level. I dont believe there is any point going that far and then not getting to the top. The 200m trek to the peak took me about 40 minutes. It was fabulous, and the summit itself is just amazing. It is the nearest place to heaven for me and it was the highest point on the planet that I have so far achieved. We stayed there for about 35 minutes taking in the spectacular panoramic views and photos. I adored it, a very unique experience to smell and touch this famous active volcano. When we got back down to the lower cable car station, the bus took us to the nearby Visitor Centre where there is also a hotel called Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide. It has a really well stocked cafe and bar. Here the guide provided us with a very basic picnic, which did not include any water, which I really could have done with at this point. After the picnic, he took us on a fantastic 2.5 hour hike of the area around the famous Roques de Garcia. It was a superb hike but it was not advertised on the Viator site as part of the tour and so I was not prepared for it by bringing extra water or sun cream. The reason they included this on the day was because our small group had to wait for another group to finish a longer 5 hour Teide Hike, as both groups were sharing the homeward bound bus. This should have been explained to us before the tour took place, then I would have been more prepared. When we finished the hike around the Rocques de Garcia, we then had to wait a further 90 minutes for the other group. I used this time to have a few beers and sit in the sun, though I would have preferred to have been on my way back to my resort at this stage as it was already a long day. As I said the homeward journey took 3 hours, and it was very frustrating, and nearly ruined the trip for me. I absolutely recommend a trip to Mt. Teide when you are in Tenerife. However if I was doing it again, I would prefer to pay a little more to travel with a smaller group where the homeward bound bus trip would be shorter than three hours. The return time to my hotel was 8pm. I gave the bus driver a very generous tip because I really felt he deserved it. He did a great job. FYI There are toilets at both the lower and upper cable car stations. The lower cable car station also has a nice, but busy cafe. I'd have given this tour 5 stars if the homeward journey was not as long as it was.

This tour was fantastic. Great experience, amazing views from the top and a nice interesting hike through the old lava flows at the base of Mt Teide. Only down point was that my partner and I both left our jackets on the bus but the company weren't very useful in helping to find them.
