This is the ultimate Andes Adventure. First, we travel to the foothills of the Andes and visit San Esteban Winery for a vineyard tour and tasting. San Esteban is a family-owned and operated producer of high quality wines and table grapes. The vineyard exports to more than 20 countries. Their grapes are planted along the banks of the Aconcagua River and on the surrounding hillsides. This geography creates a micro-climate ideally suited for wine and table grape production, with a soil quality that rivals the best wine-growing regions in South America.

Next, we visit nearby Paidahuén Archaeological Park. Paidahuén is an isolated hill located along the northern bank of the Aconcagua River in the rural town of San Esteban. At the top of Paidahuén, visitors will appreciate slabs of large rocks adorned with petroglyphs. Full of symbolism and mystery, these rock drawings are work of native populations dating from 450 to 1,000 years ago. The true meanings of the petroglyphs are unknown, but research has demonstrated that they were not made randomly. From the top of the hill, visitors may ponder unanswered questions while taking the natural context into consideration. Specifically, the relationship between Paidahuén Hill and other peaks in the valley, the hill’s strategic positioning, and the prevalence of north-facing petroglyphs are some of the observations that can help understand the importance of this site.

After lunch at a nearby restaurant, we venture to the village of Llay Llay and the largest privately-owned alpaca farm in Chile. Indulge in nature and discover this beautiful animal up close. You will see the entire alpaca wool production process and enjoy a broad selection of exclusive creations and handmade alpaca wool items that portray the patrimony and spirit of the Andean culture, which is the World of Alpaca. This tour shows visitors the essence of Chile!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

It is necessary to walk approximately 30 minutes to reach the petroglyphs at the summit of the hill. The climb is mostly gradual and can be done by a person of any age in good health.

We spent a week in Chile and took various tours (of the city, the beach, and the countryside), and this was by far the BEST of all the tours we took. Our tour guide, Sean, has been living in Chile for over 25+ years, and was a wealth of knowledge. We started off our day with a scenic drive through the countryside, and our first stop was Paidahuen. This is an archeological park with incredible views of the Andes. We went on a short hike (about 1 hour round trip), Sean had walking sticks and water for us, and we went at our own pace so we were able to take lots of pictures and soak in the incredible views. Unlike other tour groups, we did not feel rushed, and we were given the freedom to explore on our own. After the hike, we got a private tour of the In Situ winery at the base of the hill. Maria, the general manager of the vineyard, gave us a tour of the grape fields and barrel storage, and even took us behind the scenes to see the manufacturing process, even their bottle labeling process. This was a very complete winery tour, unlike some of the other wine tours we had taken in other areas. After the tour we had a wine tasting of 4 different wines complete with cheese platter. Then we drove about another 45 minutes to the Chilean/Argentinean border to an amazing local restaurant right at the foot of the Andes, with delicious local food, incredible views, and we even saw llamas and alpacas roaming in the back lawn of the restaurant. Our final stop was an alpaca farm in Llai Llai, which is the largest exporter of alpacas in the world. We got the chance to pet and feed the baby llamas, some as young as just a few days, this was by far the highlight of the trip! We also got a private tour of the yarn and clothing manufacturing operation, which was very educational. It was a full day but we loved every minute of it, and we couldn't have asked for a better tour guide than Sean.
