About this activity
Get to know the first European city in America. Here was the first Cathedral built, the first Bishop sanctified, resided the first Governor and the first hospital opened. The lively city with its three million people has a lot of cultural attributes of interest, in particular architectural sites, like nowhere else offered in the Hispaniola. You start at the historic colonial city, from UNESCO recognized World Heritage Site. During the stroll you will visit the Palace of Diego Columbus, the historic museum “Casas Reales”, the Palace of the 1st Governor, the Cathedral (closed on Sundays), and the “Colon Park”. You’ll walk through the “Calle de las Damas” (the Lady’s street) and down the pedestrian “El Conde” where you’ll see many shops, street vendors, bars and restaurants.
After lunch (included) you visit the places of interest outside the colonial city. Within this hustling and bustling city of Santo Domingo, not far from the colonial town, one encounters the national park and cave system “Los Tres Ojos” (the three eyes) with subterranean courses of rivers and dripstone caves. Go down into the caves and enjoy the view of the partially open dripstone caves and the vegetated corals. Walk through this unusually green surrounding and gaze at the three eyes. The fourth eye can only be reached using a small boat which takes you via an underground river to the cenote. Enjoy the beautiful view on a hidden lake with lush vegetation. This is the biosphere for many freshwater fish as well as bird species. Before heading back to the colonial zone, you’ll take a photo stop at controversial light tower “Faro a Colón”, a big Mausoleum rumoured to entomb the rest of Columbus.
