Enjoy one of the most beautiful cities in Hokkaido: Otaru.
In this whirlwind day-tour you will firstly head into Yoichi Distillery, where the famous Nikka Whiskey is produced. You can understand a little about the founder Masataka Taketsuru’s Scottish inspiration and dream, and then try a sample for yourself (soft-drinks are provided for non-alcohol drinkers and those under 20 years old).
After this, we’ll then drive to Otaru city for some time to explore the canal area and Sakaimachi shopping street – famous for glassworks, music boxes, and great desserts! Followed by a fantastic seafood lunch full of local fish and produce.
Finally, we’ll take the ropeway up Tengu Mountain, enjoying the panoramic views of Otaru Port and Ishikari Bay. Tengu Mountain also boasts stunning nature, a squirrel park, bobsleigh and fabulous cafe, if you want a short break at the top.

Our visit to the Nikka Distillery in Yoichi was quite informative. Learning about the whisky-making process and the romance between the founder and his Scottish wife. There are interesting bits of information about the early days of Nikka. For the drinkers, there is the paid bar or the free sampling of three types of alcohol made by Nikka. Of course visit the shop for Nikka whiskies available only at the shop or get a Mount Fuji-inspired glass for drinking or for displaying. Otaru reminds me of Venice's Murano -- lots of glass items and decorations. The Christmas theme really puts you in the mood. There are beautiful music boxes and clocks so the temptation to buy is huge. Lunch at a local seafood restaurant was memorable. Lastly, a trip up Mount Tengu for a night view of Ishikari Bay and the Shakotan Peninsula puts one at peace and wonderment. To give an idea of how great the view is, there was a couple taking wedding photos in a suit and gown -- amid freezing temperatures and snow -- talk about brave.And all this is brought to life by the guides -- Rio and Hestia -- with support from their colleague Erika. They really make you feel at home.
