About this activity
Mt.Tarumae is an active volcano located on the shores of Lake Shikotsu, the closest National Park to Sapporo.
The day start with a one hour and 30 minutes drive by 4WD vehicle from your hotel to Lake Shikotsu, beautiful lake which is the deepest in Hokkaido. We'll stop at a convenience store along the way to buy snacks, soft drinks, and lunch.
Enjoy walking around by the lake shore where you can see panoramic views of surrounding mountain ranges, include Mt.Tarumae.
Mt.Tarumae ranks among Japan's most active volcanoes and most recently erupted in 1981. Learn more about Volcano and wild life of Shikotsu-Toya National Park at a visitor center.
After a quick stop at the lake shore, it's a short drive to the 7th station of Mt.Tarumae where the hike begin.
The trail immediately starts gaining altitude, but climbing is made easier with an endless array of wooden steps.
Once at the top, the views of the smoldering lave dome are incredible. The landscape is what one imagines of Mars!
The views towards the lake below are spectacular, and on a clear day you can see the pacific ocean and Mt.Yotei.
After your descent, take a refreshing dip in a series of indoor and outdoor hot spring bath with more views of the mountain as your back drop.
Suitable walking shoes, rain jacket and pants, sunscreen, a wide brim hat and plenty of water are necessities.
