About this activity
Start your experience with a hotel pickup for a small surcharge (payable locally) or alternatively, meet your guide at Savannah Visitor Center, and then head off to explore the Historic District by air-conditioned bus and enjoy a 15 mile loop of Savannah. Sit in comfort and relax as your guide talks to you about Savannah’s history and the legacy it left on its cuisine.

Soul food features heavily on many a Savannah menu, harking back to the days when the south’s African-American slaves used humble, rustic ingredients to cook up wholesome and tasty treats. With frying as the favored cooking method plus a ready abundance of local ingredients, the region’s cuisine found its character and the term ‘soul food’ was born.

While hearing about the city’s food history, enjoy several food stops to sample the dishes for yourself. Venues change on each tour, but samples that you may try include stellar staples such as fried green tomatoes, Georgian peach tea, southern BBQ meat, soul food dishes and, of course, desserts! Travel between most of the 6 stops by bus, and occasionally stretch your legs to walk around the Historic District.

Additionally, all tours always include a stop at the legendary The Lady and Son’s Restaurant, run by ex-Food Network presenter, Paula Deen. Serving up the tastiest of home-style comfort food, the restaurant regularly has wait lines for tables that spill onto the streets. Head inside to learn about the food, and sample a taster of one of the popular dishes.

After three hours exploring Savannah Historic District, return back to the start point where your food tour finishes.

Great trip for foodies. Gary, our tour director, did a great job. The food at Paula Deen’s was our favorite. Ate too much, but totally enjoyed the tour.

This tour is a wonderful tour with 5 tastings. The stop at Paula Deen's was the best! Her fried chicken and cheese meatloaf were delicious. The tour guide was knowledgeable about the history of the city and told us other interesting tidbits. The stop at Sisters was my least favorite, but my husband seemed to enjoy it.

If you leave this tour hungry it's your own fault... especially with Paula Deen's being on the tour! Guide was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. And it's nice being able to get onto the bus very clean, air conditioned! to sit and digest rather than walk...

This is more of a history tour, as the food offered was too much of the same. Our guide was very knowledgeable, kind, and a local. We learned a lot about the movies that were filmed in Savannah, about the wars that have occurred in Savannah, and about the food culture in general. We went to 5 places: The first was Wright Square Cafe. There we had a small piece of a wrap...it was nothing spectacular nor specific to the food culture of Savannah. It seemed completely random. Next we went to Mother and Sons, Paula Deen's restaurant. I was surprised to see that it is a buffet. They give you a small bowl, and you will it up with your fill of the typical food choices: fried chicken, mac and cheese, biscuits. etc. The food there was very good and hearty, and actually filled me up quite quickly. The gift shop is worth a quick look and a laugh. From there we went to Sisters Real Southern Cooking...about 15 minutes drive. The place smelled of mildew and no one took our food OR drink orders for about 20 minutes. Even our guide seemed to be getting impatient with the service. When the food did come out, it was fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. Nothing against it, but we just had eaten that. We went to River Street Sweets and had a praline and bear claw, which were good. Then we went back to the same place we started at for some lemon dessert that I don't remember. All in all, I got a lot of history and a relaxing afternoon there were only 4 of us on the tour. The food, however, lacked the true representation of the culture, which is why most people book food tours. The company did say that they were currently in a Transition period and I think they knew that their food options left a little to be desired.

This was a total waste of our time and money. We didn't do anything that we couldn't have done on our own. There was no explanation of southern cooking at all. We visited normal tourist venues that could have been seen in almost any city. There were a couple of interesting places we did visit, but all we did was sample a food item and they hurry to the next location. Again, we would not take this tour again.
