About this activity
Make your way to the Verde Canyon Railroad Train Depot in Clarkdale, Arizona, not far from Sedona, to begin your Verde Canyon Railroad adventure.

This rail adventure offers a wilderness train ride through the remote Verde Canyon which is known for its picturesque setting and abundant wildlife. Though it’s possible to hike in the canyon, by far the easiest way to experience it is by riding this scenic wilderness train.

The train is made up of exquisitely-renovated passenger coaches and open-air viewing cars pulled by vintage locomotives and travels a route along the Verde River between Clarkdale and Perkinsville. After embarking from the Clarkdale depot, sit back for a 4-hour, 40-mile round trip that includes views of historic mining sites, geological wonders, Sinagua Indian cliff dwellings and wildlife from bald eagles to antelope.

You will remain spellbound as your vintage carriages cross an expansive railway bridge embedded in basalt cliffs, glide through a covered bridge opening the gateway to Perkinsville, or experience daylight retreating in the 680-foot manmade tunnel, all odes to that same bygone era. Two FP7 locomotives, only two of 10 remaining in North America, are the muscle that powers the newly-renovated passenger cars.

Indoor cars are climate-controlled with restrooms and the train meets ADA requirements. Your first class cabins feature panoramic windows in a living room-style atmosphere of comfortable love seats or bistro-style chair-and-table seating near panoramic windows. Enjoy a champagne toast upon boarding, a variety of complimentary appetizers reflecting the southwest region and full-service cash bars featuring premium liquors and beverage service at your seat. With comfortable seating indoors and access to high-backed benches on the adjoining open-air cars, it is like getting two seats for the price of one.

How fun, everything was very nice. Immaculate train including the bathroom. Our inside steward Becky was awesome, so was our outside lady(cannot remember her name but she was great too). We did have any snacks but they looked great. The scenery was amazing, loved the music and commentary during the trip. Sonora and her trainer were awesome, so cool to see a bald eagle up close.

We were on this Railroad two years ago and it was much better then. We were disappointed in the narration; hardly any. Two years ago we heard all kinds of information about the valley we went through. This year hardly anything. We were in Cottonwood first class coach and couldn’t hear anything thru the speakers. So we got moved to another first class coach and we were in there by ourselves (4 of us) and there were only 2 speakers working. That was Wickenburg coach. The speakers were not loud enough. The scenery was beautiful but you need to have more narration about the valley and get those speakers louder! Thank you.

I loved this tour! It was a great way to see the red rocks up close without hiking or taking a bumpy jeep tour. The vintage train car has comfy couches and a bar. It includes appetizers/snacks and plenty of water. Each indoor car also has it's own outdoor car so you get panoramic views as you travel through the canyon. And there is a bathroom in each car as well. It was a very relaxing ride. We got a great day which made the ride all the more enjoyable. There is a recording that reviews the history of the canyon on the indoor car but then there was a live tour guide on the outdoor car who provided more detail and answered any questions. If you're looking for a relaxing afternoon with some great views I would definitely recommend this tour. As a reference, we stayed in Sedona. We got up early and drove to see Montezuma Castle and Well, Tuzigoot, lunch break, then the railroad tour. So by the time we go on board we were reading to relax.
