At the beginning of the Nineteenth Century, in Belém, next to Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (the Heironymite Monastery) there was a sugar cane refinery attached to a small general store. As a result of the 1820 liberal revolution, all convents and monasteries in Portugal were shut down in 1834, the clergy and labourers expelled.

In an attempt at survival, someone from the monastery offered sweet pastries for sale in the shop; pastries that rapidly became known as ‘Pastéis de Belém’.

At that period the area of Belém was considered far from the city of Lisbon and mainly accessed by steam-boats. At the same time, the grandeur of the monastery and the Torre de Belém (the Belém Tower) attracted visitors who soon grew used to savouring the delicious pastries originated in the monastery.

The Sanctuary of Christ the King is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. The project was inaugurated on 17 May 1959. The giant statue in cement was erected to express gratitude because the Portuguese were spared the effects of World War II.

The Bertrand Chiado was recognized in 2011 by the Guinness Book as the oldest bookstore in the world still in operation. Having opened its doors in 1732, this store located at Rua Garrett in Chiado has several rooms and a few spots so the visitors can sit and read. By having a long operating time, the bookstore witnessed several important moments of the recent history of Portugal, and has had the privilege to receive important visitors. In resume, the place is mandatory for anyone who passes by Chiado!

The Church of São Roque is a Catholic church. built at the end of the 16th century. He belonged to the Society of Jesus, being his first church in Portugal, and one of the first Jesuit churches in the world. It was the Company's main church in Portugal for more than 200 years, before the Jesuits were expelled from the country in the 18th century. The church of São Roque was one of the few buildings in Lisbon to survive the relatively unscathed 1755 earthquake.

Praça do Comércio, located next to the river Tagus, in the area that was the site of the palace of the kings of Portugal for about two centuries and is now partially occupied by some government departments. It is one of the largest squares in Europe, with about 36,000 m² (180m x 200m).

In 1511, King D. Manuel I transferred his residence from the Castle of St. George to this place by the river.
