Gray Whale Watching Cruise

About this activity
Kick-start spring with the chance to view the annual return of the gray whales to Alaskan waters. The Gray Whale Watching Cruise begins in late March, departing from Seward at 1:00pm and returning at 5:00pm. During this time, search for the California Gray Whales as they make their annual journey north from Baja California to the Bering Sea, passing by Resurrection Bay.

The Gray Whale Watching Cruise travels approximately 55 miles along the rugged coastline of Resurrection Bay. In addition to gray whales, you also might see Humpback Whales, Orcas, Dall’s porpoises, sea otters, and seabirds. Occasionally you will see mountain goats with their newly born kids or bears foraging for vegetation along the coastline of Resurrection Bay.

Nestled high in the mountains along the coast of Resurrection Bay are several alpine glaciers, with brilliant blue colors peeking out from the snow-covered mountains. We will cruise by Bear Glacier, a Piedmont Glacier and the largest glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park.

Guests should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions including snow and freezing rain. Hats, gloves, warm clothing, waterproof layers, and comfortable, rubber soled shoes are strongly recommended. Beer, wine, and snacks are available for purchase from the snack bar during the cruise. We provide complimentary coffee, hot tea, and water, and guests may bring their own food and beverages if they desire.
