We start our journey with a visit to Phuket Town the main city on the island and an area, rich in culture and history. A guided tour takes in the Sino-Portuguese style buildings and there is also an opportunity to shop at one of the many bustling local markets. Phuket town was originally settled about a century ago by Chinese residents of Malaysia who were drawn to the lucrative mineral deposits. Tin and rubber fortunes created by the great rush formed the great Sino-Thai dynasties, which still dominate the economies of southern Thailand.
