About this activity
Meet your guide and small group at Soho Free House on Penang Road, and begin your 3-hour food tour of Penang with a traditional Malay breakfast. Walk to one of the city’s oldest Malaysian-Chinese coffee shops, known locally as a kopitiam, where you’ll sample nasilemak (rice cooked in coconut milk) with chili paste and a boiled egg.

While visiting one of Penang’s most popular vendors, sink your teeth into prawn fritters and lobak, a deep-fried, spiced pork roll that’s a delicacy in Nonya cuisine. Then stroll to one of Penang’s oldest markets, overflowing with seafood, fruits, vegetables and dried goods. Sample a variety of preserved fruits and taste seasonal produce such as rambutan, mangosteen, dukong and — if you’re daring enough — durian (known for its strong odor).

Explore historical streets with preserved heritage buildings and hidden back lanes, listening as your foodie guide describes Penang’s diverse street food culture along the way. You’ll have the opportunity to taste specialties like assam laksa (rice noodles in sour fish soup), char kuey teow (fried flat rice noodles) and murtabak (bread with meat fillings) in Penang’s oldest Indian Muslim restaurant, dating back to 1907. Watch how crullers (fried pastry), called yutiao, are made, and feast your eyes on the array of salted fish at a local vendor in one of Penang’s earliest low-income housing estates.

When it comes time for dessert, dig into a cool bowl of cendol, a serving of ice shavings with green doughy strips and red beans covered with coconut milk. Make sure to try one of the local non-alcoholic drinks: hot tehtarik (pulled tea), lime juice with sour plum, nutmeg juice and more.

Your tour ends at a market, where you can purchase items to take home with you. (Check your country’s import laws to confirm what food products are permitted for travelers.)

Please note: A minimum of 2 people per booking is required.

What a fabulous tour! Our guide, Po Lian, was highly knowledgeable and explained everything in a friendly and interesting way. We got to try a huge number of different and delicious things, from noodle dishes to fish and meats, fruits, drinks and desserts. She was able to accommodate my food allergies and made sure that I could eat everything. I was in Penang for 2 weeks before taking this tour, and wasn't finding food this good - and never would have stumbled upon these places myself. I would highly recommend this tour -- but don't eat breakfast beforehand, and bring your appetite!

This tour was a highlight of our Penang stay and we could not recommend guide Poh or the content highly enough. The food and insights to the culture were wonderful

If you are a first time visitor to Penang, as we were, this small group tour is the best introduction to the diverse food styles and flavours found particularly in the Georgetown area. We tasted, Malaysian, Indian and Chinese influenced dishes from lor bak to murtabak, noodles, soups and a cooling coconut milk dessert, plus delicious sweet PoPiah filled with crushed peanuts. Our guide Junie was very well informed about the food treasures of Penang. She considered other group members food preferences and sensitivities with care and diplomacy. My partner and I ate everything offered and were not disappointed! Junie guided us safely through the unpredictable traffic and some uneven pavements which was a real help. She shared her knowledge and enthusiasm generously. This is an unmissable experience. Don't eat breakfast if you are on a morning tour!

The day of our tour it was just my wife and I and our outstanding guide, Junne, was waiting for us upon arrival. She spoke perfect English and took us through a wide range of activities until we could not eat or walk any further. Not only was she super knowledgeable about the fact of and restaurants of Penang but she gave us terrific tips about where to go and what to do on the island.mi could not recommend the tour higher. Sorry if I misspelled our guides name, her business card is safely filed away in my suitcase to recommend to my friends and clients.
