About this activity
Visit: Penang House of Music, George Town, Penang Island, Penang

You begin your journey into Penang’s musical past with an introduction to the traditional musical arts of Penang’s communities, some of which are still performed today. One of these traditions is the Potehi (puppetry), so try your hand at being a puppeteer with our digital Potehi display.
The 1940s till the 1960s were a significant period in Penang, and Malaya’s history. You will discover the impact of World War II, and the Emergency in Penang through the exhibits but also by listening to music that was sung, performed or composed by Penang musicians at our Listening Dome. The Rolling Cubes is ‘a slice of life’ exhibit with photographs and information about venues, bands, and musicians of that era. Next, is an interactive painting by local artist Bibichun, featuring some prominent musicians of Penang, hover your Penang House of Music app over it to see it come to life!
One of our most beloved spots is the Kopitiam (Coffee Shop), a faithful reinterpretation from the 1960s, with reprints of newspapers and magazines for your perusal, while tunes from the 1960s play through the radio.
Continue to the Radio Room, for a history of Radio in Penang with photographs, news articles, quotes and posters from the 1960s. Try your hand at being a Radio DJ in our re-creation of an old Radio broadcasting room, your recording can even be downloaded to be enjoyed at home. Next is rock star time, where you can play with instruments like the piano, double bass, drums, skiffle bass, conga and even our precious Hawaiian guitar! Or venture to our recreation of an old style “family room TV” area; or to the Cinema room where you can experience going to the movies in old Penang, complete with wooden chairs! The interactive experience continues at our VR Room with a 3D performance of song written by Jimmy Boyle.
At the end of the tour, we highly recommend history buffs to explore our Resource Centre for a comprehensive look into the rich and beautiful heritage of Penang’s musical history, or simply linger at any exhibit that captures your fancy.
