A slow drive into the city takes you pass some of the landmarks and historical buildings of George Town’s colonial era. Begin the first part of the tour with Penang culinary experience or food tasting at a local street food court. Try famous local dishes like Laksa, Char Koay Teow, Rojak etc. After food tasting, have a feel of the old town ambience through a short and relaxing trishaw ride in the centre of George Town. Finally, experience the Hungry Ghost Festival which is celebrated only during the seventh month of the Lunar calendar. During this month, it is believed that the gates of hell are thrown open for spirits and ghosts from the netherworld to roam freely in search for food. Thus, makeshift altars are erected at roadsides, giant joss stick are lit and food is offered to appease their hunger in return for peace and prosperity. You have a chance to view a huge paper effigy of the ‘King of Hades’, enjoy either a staged opera performance, a puppet show or a local band performance (depending on the budget of the sponsors) which are actually meant for the entertainment of the ghosts and spirits, but popularly shared by the public.
