About this activity
If you haven't chosen our transfer option you can meet us at the start point outside Eu Yan Sang traditional chinese medicine shop at 113 New Bridge road. After an introduction to our respected guide we will take a tour of the shop learning about cordyceps, ginseng and birds nest among other things. Guests here will be able to try a medicinal egg and some herbal tea.
We then take a short walk through Chinatown and visit a few different herbal shops. Often some of the things on display are not available anywhere else in the world. We'll try a revitalizing ginseng drink along the way to beat the heat. We then see one of Singapore's most revered Buddhist temples, but before we tour the great hall we go down a hidden side passage and into the basement where there is a secret vegetarian restaurant. Here the staff make old school Singaporean classics such as Laksa and Mee Goreng but with a vegetarian twist. We'll take a seat and enjoy some tastings. After our short lunch we explore the rest of the temple.
Just to the back of the temple is the Chinatown wet market. This is a mecca for local chefs coming to buy the days produce. Our food expert will point out where to buy the freshest herbs, fruits and veg and we'll try a few as we walk through the narrow passages.
We then take a short journey to Little India by MRT or taxi depending on your wishes.
After our short ride we visit the Ayurveda centre and have a short talk with one of Singapore's most respected Ayurveda doctors about this southern Indian form of preventative medicine. Herbs, spices and oils are all an integral part of the process.
Following our visit to the Ayurveda clinic we take a short stroll through Little India. Along the way our guide will point out local facts and stories and we'll pass some produce stalls going about their everyday business.
Our last stop for food on the tour comes at an original fast food restaurant. Most people would associate fast food with unhealthy living but in Little India it's a bit different. Following our lunch we'll walk the food off by taking a short stroll along Serangoon road (Little India's main thoroughfare) before visiting the coconut man and seeing him expertly shave and split the coconuts for our drinks.
