Tiong Bahru Public Housing Estate in Singapore
3h30
About this activity
Start your 3.5-hour morning tour with hotel pickup in Singapore and head to The Pinnacle@Duxton — the pride of Singapore architecture — for stunning views from the 50th floor (subject to weather conditions). Next, you'll proceed with your guide to Tiong Bahru; it remains the only public estate not built by the current Housing Development Board, which subsidizes housing for more than 80 percent of the population.
Learn about the colonial government's Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) that constructed Tiong Bahru. Once a slum, the hills were leveled and the soil used to fill in the swampy ground before the estate was built. It is also believed to be the only complete and undamaged public housing structure from the pre-war period in Southeast Asia, modeled after British towns in the Art Deco style.
Sample local breakfast at Tiong Bahru Market, which boasts some of the best hawker stalls in Singapore. Stop for a photo at the 90-year-old Qi Tian Gong Temple, Singapore’s oldest temple, which honors the Monkey God who bestows blessings and protection, eliminates bad luck, and grants longevity and prosperity.
Head to Glacier Pastry and sample local, bite-size desserts. At Tiong Bahru Road, check out the Dispensary, a cafe whose centerpiece is a former Chinese medicine cabinet behind the counter, now offering whole and sliced cakes, cupcakes, macaroons, and a few savory bites.
Lastly, at the spot formerly occupied by a Chinese Temple known as Hulu Miao, you'll find the Nostalgia Hotel, a boutique hotel featuring design and decor inspired by Singapore’s colonial years. Conclude your tour with drop-off back at your hotel.
Note: Itinerary is subject to change without prior notice due to local events and traffic.
