Exploring Sitka Alaska by land and sea

Begin your journey from downtown Sitka with a small group of up to 10 guests. We'll head southbound in a comfortable passenger van to a scenic lookout point called Silver Bay; here we'll look for bald eagles, various diving birds and enjoy the incredible view of snow-capped mountains. Afterward, our small group will head to the Fortress of the Bears, where our guide will accompany us to a viewing platform to view 6 coastal brown bears and 3 black bears. Our guide's personal knowledge and unique relationship with these bears will allow you to get very close.

Then it's off to Sitka National Historical Park ( Totem Park). This unique park lies between Indian River and the Eastern Channel and boasts numerous well-maintained trails that are punctuated with towering totem poles. Here you'll have a chance to do a short rain forest trek or visit the interpreter center.

Our final stop on land will be at the Mean Queen. This locally owned and operated establishment is located right in the heart of historic downtown Sitka and boasts a variety of handcrafted and unique beers. Enjoy flavors from all around Alaska on their ever-changing taps. Depending on taste (and age ), non-alcoholic beverages are also available. Enjoy both in a family friendly tasting room.

Enjoy the next part of your tour seaward as we venture into Alaska's coastal waterways on a vessel. On this tour, we'll view whales, sea otter, and sea lions. Our waters are home to an abundance of marine life such as sea lions, otters, seals and an array of birds; these waters are also stops for whales and orcas, which feed on a variety of sea life. Join us as we explore Alaska’s southeast waters aboard our 24-foot vessel with both a forward and aft viewing deck. This allows for a truly intimate experience as we explore coves, islands and search for an array of marine life.

Stop At: Sitka National Historic Park/Totem Park, 103 Monastery St, Sitka, AK 99835-7617

On an island amid towering spruce and hemlock, Sitka National Historical Park preserves the site of a battle between invading Russian traders and indigenous Kiks.ádi Tlingit. Visitors are awed by Tlingit and Haida totem poles standing along the park’s scenic coastal trail, and the restored Russian Bishop’s House speaks of Russia’s little known colonial legacy in North America.

Duration: 25 minutes

Stop At: Fortress of the Bear, 4639 Sawmill Creek Rd, Sitka, AK 99835-9805

This center opened in 2007, and now houses 7 bears. More than 20,000 visitors per year come to experience the majesty of these amazing creatures. We’ve sent bears to the Bronx Zoo, Montana Grizzly Encounter and the International Exotic Animal Sanctuary in Boyd, Texas. Our goal is to work with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game to someday release rehabbed bears back into the wild. As a 501(C)3 not-for-profit organization, The Fortress of the Bears rely solely on admission fees and donations for funding.
