Stop At: Rila Monastery, Rila 2643 Bulgaria
We will start our tour with a pick up from your hotel in Sofia at 8.30 am. After 2 hours journey we will reach the parking lot of the monastery complex.
Few are the places in the world, which are more beautiful than the holiest place for all of the Bulgarians. From the beginning we will be amazed by the beauty of Rila mountain, which like proud giant protects the monastery complex. The first touch with the cloister is also one of a kind - the warm colours of the monastery walls are forming incredible palette with the forest hills surrounding them, just like a painting from a marvelous artist. In addition we will see the outstanding frescoes of the church "Nativity of Mary", because of which the monastery today is the most popular tourists site in Bulgaria and part of UNESCO World Heritage.
Here we will spend about 2 hours, visiting the monastery museum (entrance fee included) and exploring in deep details the secrets of the church and its frescoes. Of course there would be plenty time for pictures as well.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Osogovo Monastery, Kriva Palanka Republic of North Macedonia
At noon we will depart from Rila monastery towards our next destination in the country of North Macedonia - The Osogovo monastery complex.
After hour and a half journey we will reach the border checkpoint between Bulgaria and its Southwestern neighbour. After crossing we will have something like 15 minutes of driving to our destination, which is located just 20 km from the border.
Our first stop would be the restaurant above the cloister, where we can try some authentic Macedonian dishes (lunch is at own expense and it is not compulsory).
At 3 pm we will take the steps from the parking lot to the yard of one of the most beautiful Macedonian monastery complexes. Here we will learn about its turbulent past, which starts somewhere in XI c. and how important is this place for all the people, who live in the area. We will visit both of the churches, situated in a gorgeous valley between the lovely hills of Osogovo mountain and make a comparison and parallels between the Bulgarian and North Macedonian monastery heritage.
At 4 pm we wills set for our journey back to Sofia. Our tour will finish somewhere 6.30 pm with a drop off at your hotel.

Start with a pick up from the hotel. Drive to Rila with lots of information about all sorts of things about Bulgaria. The guide knows a lot about history and geography. After a tour of the monastery museum we had free time to look around. A choice to have lunch in Rila or Macedonia...we chose Rila and had a great lunch. (Apparently they will take Bulgarian Lev in the restaurant in Macedonia too). Drive to Macedonia and visit a smaller monastery with a quick tour followed by free time before driving back to Sofia. A great tour with lots of information and enough freedom to choose lunch location and to wander round the monasteries. Definitely recommended!
