About this activity
From the ancient Roman era to the 1990s fall of Yugoslavia, there’s a lot of history to discover in Croatia — and we’re cramming it all in on this epic Split tour that takes you time-traveling through more than 2,000 years of history.
The Roman emperor Diocletian landed in the pages of history as a great reformer, and an enlightened mind who was not afraid of changes… or their consequences. Yet some might say Diocletian’s most notable move wasn’t his many reforms, but the fact that he voluntarily resigned and retired at the end of his 21-year reign, something unheard of among Roman rulers. We’ll learn about the legacy left by the emperor with a visit to the monumental Diocletian’s Palace. This UNESCO World Heritage site has stood as a witness to many changes in Split’s history, and you’ll learn surprising facts about the palace grounds — like how the ancient property is still inhabited today.
We’ll then fast-forward to Croatia’s modern history, with the Yugoslavian break-up and the War of Independence. It was a time when brave people fought for their freedom and weren’t afraid of the consequences — much like ancient Diocletian, who had left his mark on the Balkans so many years before. This era brought in a clear vision of what the new state would be, and kick-started deep political reforms that would forever change the future of this region.
But don’t worry, we’re not going to make this a history lecture! Instead, we’re going to chat to a local about their experiences during the wars in the 1990s, over a tasty snack and a coffee.
Your tour ends here but before you go, don’t forget to ask your local guide for tips on what else to see, do and eat during your stay in Split.

Our Guide yesterday was wonderful, sadly his name slips us but he did such a good job. It is really worth going on these tours as it provides such a good introduction. Diocletians Palace is well worth the explore with Urban Adventures. If you are made like us and tour in the middle of winter you also end up being the only two - a private guided tour!
