Leave your centrally located Strasbourg hotel in your private, air-conditioned minivan with your driver-guide at the wheel. Relax as you head south through picturesque countryside to the vibrant university town of Freiburg, the gateway to Germany’s Black Forest and sitting deep in wine-producing country.
After around an hour, arrive in Freiburg and set off on a guided walking tour. Stroll around the photogenic old town and admire the gabled townhouses, cobbled streets and wide squares as your guide tells you intriguing tales about the town’s 11th-century roots and architectural influences.
Gaze in wonder at the magnificent Freiburg Minster (Cathedral of Freiburg), a massive sandstone edifice that looms above the picturesque Münsterplatz square. Admire its sculpted doorway, gargoyles and spires, and roam the surrounding lanes to see landmarks like the arcaded Kaufhaus, and the little streams that frame the tiny streets beside the cathedral.
After your tour, enjoy some free time to explore independently and perhaps stop for lunch (own expense) at one of Freiburg’s welcoming taverns and restaurants.
Then, return to your minivan for your journey deep into the Black Forest. Booked this tour through Viator for 8 people, and had a minivan that comfortably seated all of us. Our tour guide/driver was Jean Yves, with local tour operator Ophorus. He did a wonderful job of explaining to us the history and pertinent facts of all the areas we traveled through on this tour, took us to a favored local restaurant in the hills overlooking Freiburg for lunch, and also went out of his way to take us to a great shop in the Black Forest for quality souvenirs, as our tour was on a Sunday, and most shops are closed. He maintained a great sense of humor, and made us feel that he was enjoying our company as much as we enjoyed his! Highly recommend this tour!
Amazing trip to Freiburg and the Black Forest. Definitely worth it. Freiburg is an enchanting town, right out of a fairy tale book so is the lake area around the black forest region. Beautiful landscapes on our way back to Strasbourg, passing thru breath-taking villages and vineyards. Our guide Danielle was very knowledgeable and helpful, she made sure to follow our own pace and make the best out of the tour.
