About this activity
The Erie Canal no longer flows through downtown Syracuse, but the impact of the waterway is still evident. The Downtown Syracuse Erie Canal Walking Tour starts at the historic 1850 Syracuse Weighlock Building, which once stood along the banks of the Erie Canal and is now home to the Erie Canal Museum. The tour then follows the path of the original Erie Canal, which ran through the heart of the city. It features some of Syracuse’s oldest and most well-known structures and includes discussions on canal buildings and bridges, the economic impact of the Erie and Oswego canals and the changing face of Clinton Square. This guided hour-long tour includes a booklet of historic images to complement the contemporary views of Downtown Syracuse seen along the way.
Tour participants are encouraged to explore the Erie Canal Museum before or after the tour as well. Admission to the Museum is by donation. Tour is free for children (17 & under).
