Beautiful Messina From Taormina

Departing from Taormina, we will travel along the Ionian coast to arrive in Messina. We will cross the fishermen villages to reach the Lakes of Ganzirri, stopping at Head Peloro, which is the nearest point to Europe, where you will see where Ionian sea and Mediterranean sea meet and admire closely the natural beauties and the landscapes of the Strait of Messina. The sea around Head Peloro is a nature reserve called Laguna Capo Peloro. It is a site of international importance, and it has been included in UNESCO’s Water Project since 1972. During the journey, you will discover the legends which characterize the area of the strait, the most known are “Scilla and Cariddi”, “Colapesce” and the legend of Risa, an ancient town that suddenly sank with all its inhabitants in the waters of the great lake of Ganzirri. You will admire the famous “feluche”, authentic boats still used today to fish the swordfish. Continuing towards the historical center, there is the option to stop at the Regional Museum of Messina, home to works of art of rare artistic beauty realized by painters of international reputation such as Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and Antonello da Messina. During the tour you will notice the “Madonnina del Porto”, the Fountain of Neptune realized in 1557 by Montorsoli, as well as the baroque church of “Gesu e Maria del Buon Viaggio” built in 1598. The tour will end with the visit to the Cathedral and the Bell Tower, where the greatest astronomic clock in the world is located, as well as the Catalani’s Church, the Sanctuary of Montalto, and the panoramic point situated in front of Sacrarium of Christ the King.
