About this activity
Leaving the port at Mount Maunganui, your shore excursion begins with a trip beside the port's pristine ocean beach and waterfront.

Your first stop is Te Puke, New Zealand's kiwifruit capital, the Kiwifruit Country. Then, travel through the Bay of Plenty's beautiful farmland, past forests of pine trees, and stop to take a short walk to Okere Waterfalls, home to rainbow trout, eels and freshwater crayfish.

Continue into the North Island’s lake country, where more than a dozen beautiful lakes dot the countryside. Your tour includes a stop for lunch beside lovely Lake Rotorua (own expense).

In the early afternoon, visit the unique thermal wonderland of Whakarewarewa, an amazing landscape of erupting hot springs, bubbling mud and the famous Pohutu Geyser, which erupts up to 20 times a day. Take a walk with a Maori guide to hear how people came to live in harmony with this volatile environment, learning to use the boiling cauldrons and jets of steam for everyday purposes such as cooking and communal bathing.

After learning about Maori traditions and culture, see this way of life in action when you visit New Zealand's only authentic living Maori village. Experience a traditional Maori welcome with songs and dances, including the famously warlike Haka dance.

Complete your Rotorua shore excursion with a tour of Rotorua’s highlights, including the Government Gardens, historic bath house and natural hot springs at Whangapipiro (Rachel's Pool). If time allows, visit one of New Zealand's earliest tourist sights at beautiful Lake Tarawera.

The return trip to your cruise ship at Mount Maunganui follows a different route, taking you through the region’s rolling farmland and the Tauranga City center before crossing the harbor bridge to the port.

We were a group of 6 adults and took this tour from our ship Solstice in Jan 2019, however when we reached our tour meeting point, we found that were we not booked on this tour together as group of 6 as requested and we were forced to move from a small van group arrangement to a larger bus in order for us to all be together for this tour. The tour itself was very informative where we visited the Okere Waterfalls and an active Maori village which allow us to learn how the Maori people live today, how they cook their food and function in today's modern world.

Started out disappointing. We booked this excursion with Viator. We are a group of 6 and expected a small van. Showed up to be in 2 different groups and ended up on a large coach bus so we could all be together. We booked this tour 6 months in advance. The tour was excellent. We visited a Honey and Ice Cream store and a Maori Village which was very informative and interesting.

Our guide Nick was excellent. I would have given it five stars, but lunch was a fiasco (and a couple of guests wanted to see the honey store) and we had to miss seeing the waterfalls. I enjoyed hearing about the Maori culture from tribal members and visiting their village and thermal features. The kiwi plantation was also a highlight.

Better than our ships options. Main geyser never went up several smaller ones did. Interesting historical area. Lots of tour busses! Covered lots of ground. Lunch was a quick mall food court.

what we enjoyed about our tour was that it was only a small group.I was hoping we would see some mud pools.

Although long, this tour gives a good overall view of the region. Lovely scenery, interesting maori site and show. Unfortunately, due to à restaurant closure, we were left in a shopping mall for lunch. Zero for ambiance. Very informative guide.

We really enjoyed this tour with Sue the bus driver. She was very knowledgeable and shared points of interest with us as we made our way to Rotorua. What an amazing place this is. Don't forget to go to the boiling mud location that our Moari guide did not take us to, although her tour itself was very well done.
