Stop At: Shumi Winery, Village Tsinandali, Kakheti, Georgia, Tsinandali 2217 Georgia
On first stop we are going to be hosted by citizen of Kakheti-George who will show how Georgians are living in winery region. We see wonderful house and view from his home. We are having a coffee break hear and then continuing our tour.
Afterwards we tend to taste wine at “Shumi”. “Wine company SHUMI” is one of the leaders among producers of high quality Georgian wines. In ancient Georgia, The world “Shumi” meant genuine, undiluted wine. It has long since been used as a defining term for the best wine. The logo of the company is a griffin (“Phaskunji” in Georgian mythology), which according to an ancient legend, brought the very first brunch of grapes to the people. It was from these grapes that people started growing wines on Earth.
The main advantage if the “Wine company SHUMI” is a full circle of production in a so called “closed cycle”, implying all stages of wine-making, from growing and harvesting grapes to producing and bottling finished wine in brand-name bottles and realizing it through distinguished trading outlets with impeccable reputation.
“SHUMI” produces almost all types of Georgian wine from the high quality category list (analogous to Bordeaux wine AOC). In addition, the company uses its unique technology to produce “lori” brandy, “Kahetian Chacha” and “Kahetian Chacha special” grape grappas aged in oak barrels, an organic (bio) wine and an original, natural beverage made by excusive technology, named “Zigu”. Here you are offered degustation of wine (optional) and tasting some Georgian traditional sweets “Churchkhela” (Georgian snickers).
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Kindzmarauli Corporation Wine House, Chavchavadze St. 55, Kvareli 383320 Georgia
Next stop is at “JSC Kindzmarauli Corporation”. The history of Corporation Kindzmarauli dates back to 1533, and is connected with the construction of the Kvareli fortress. According to the degree of King Levan Didi of Kakheti, the wine marani (cellar) was erected in conjunction with other royal buildings. This wine cellar produced wine and molasses (badagi) exclusively for the royal families for much of its history, and now has opened to the wider local and international market. Since the 70s, the vineyards have been passed through several owners, and changed into Joint Stock Company status. Corporation Kindzmarauli's 433 wineskins yield 866 sapalne (Georgian measure of capacity) or 27,712 chapi (Georgian measure of capacity), equal to 600,000 bottles per year. They export to 10 countries, and have cognac spirits with 3-23 years of aging.
Corporation Kindzmarauli feels strongly that when tasting their wine, the consumer should be able to feel, taste, and smell the unique features of the place in which the vines were cultivated, to get acquainted with traditions and history that are connected with the vineyards, and to embrace the traditions and customs of the vineyard's ancestors. Thus, the company only produces special and traditional wines that have the right to bear the place of origin's name and identity. After having an excursion in winery factory, you can taste some wine and then we drive to “Ilia Lake”.
