MTSKHETA was the ancient capital of the Eastern Georgia from the 3rd BC to the 5th Century of AD. It has been Georgian’s spiritual heart since Christianity was established here. The historical monuments of Mtskheta played an outstanding role in the history of its region. The Holly Cross Monastery of Jvari, Svetitskhoveli and Samtavro Monastery are key monuments of medieval Georgia.
JVARI MONASTERY – The great church represents the peak of the architectual typology. It is a true architectual masterpiece of the early medieval period overlooking the confluence of Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers from the top of the hill.
SVETITSKHOVELI – This architectual wonder dates back to the 11th century. It is considered one of the holiest places in Georgia, since Christ’s robeis believed to lie beneath the central nave. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is the second largest church building in Georgia, and is listed as a UNESCO World Hermitage Site along with other historical monuments of Mtskheta.
SAMTAVRO – Monastery was built in the early 11th century.
