La Fortuna Waterfall is located within Arenal Volcano National Park, where the temperatures are between 18° and 35° Celsius, which generates abundant vegetation and diversity of fauna. This natural monument is admired by more than 100,000 tourists from around the world every year. La Fortuna Waterfall is generated by the waters of the Fortuna River and its small tributaries, which are born in the mountains of the park. Among the reliefs that can be mentioned are the Cerro de los Perdidos, Placas de Mayo, and Cerro Chato, which are supported on rocky bases of great geological value and enrich the scenic beauty of the place.

Once you enter the Río Fortuna Ecological Reserve, the vegetation and the sounds of the fauna surrounding the place will be your best companions. The facilities have a small square, a viewpoint in the upper part of La Reserva, and accessibility for people with disabilities. From there you can see La Catarata at a distance of 200 meters.

The route consists of about 500 steps downward to get to the imposing Rio Fortuna Waterfall, where the peace and majesty of nature will make you enjoy its waters and the scenic beauty of this place. The path was recently remodeled, which also has comfortable rest areas.

Finally, at the end of the path will be waiting a splendid 70-meter high waterfall. Admired by more than 100,000 tourists from around the world every year, they can swim and enjoy the crystalline waters in peace with this wonderful natural resource of La Fortune.

Review for July/August visit low season. The waterfall is absolutely gorgeous! The water is clean and not too cold, as well. There is only a small area for people to wade in. It is very rocky, so bring water shoes to protect your feet. The walk to and from the waterfall is very well maintained. It is, however, very steep and has a million steps. I am in good shape and still had to stop to take catch my breath on the way back up. Parking is free but very limited. The tour buses seem to have priority. Since the lot is so small, it is fairly safe, as it is near the entrance. We didn't see any signs pointing to the waterfall on the drive up, but noticed that if you followed the rainforest coffee tour signs, off of the main highway, it essentially lead you to the waterfall. We went during the low season on a Monday and it was relatively full. I can't imagine how packed it must be during the high season for such a small place! We only spent an hour at the waterfall because of all the people. It's beautiful and fun to see, though. And, a great deal for the price of the admission. You don't need the guides. Just buy your ticket and enjoy the steps up and down, it's about two football fields worth of steps in each direction. Bring bug spray, some snacks, and enjoy!
