Mito City is well known for its plum trees and Kairakuen, which is one of the three most celebrated gardens in Japan, and the other two are Kenrokuen in Kanazawa City, and Korakuen in Okayama Prefecture. The name of Kairakuen built by the ninth Lord of Mito means “to share pleasure with people together”. The design of garden is regarded to have delivered the concept of the interactive Yin and Yang principles; the west layout of cedar trees and bamboo represents Yin, while the east plum trees stands for Yang. In early spring over 3000 plum trees gracefully bloom in Kairakuen.

Hitachi Seaside Park is one of major sightseeing spots in Ibaraki Prefecture, and home to variety of colorful flowers and grasses. The 200 hectares’ park is divided into seven areas with leisure spots or flower fields. At different time of year, seasonal flower blossom can be viewed, such as spring’s narcissus, tulip, Nemophila, summer is the best time to view Zinnia, sunflower and roses, while when it comes to autumn, the fluffy red kochia and cosmos are among the most popular flowers.
