Stop At: Mari Vineyards, 8175 Center Rd, Traverse City, MI 49686-1669

Mari Vineyards founder Marty Lagina made the (some would say) crazy choice to grow grapes that shouldn't grow in Michigan, with the belief that he could produce world class wines that otherwise couldn't be made here. So, true to his Italian heritage, he planted exotic varieties like Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and others. Combined with a little creative grape growing and a lot of attention, today his dream has become a reality. Along with classic area grapes like Cabernet Franc and Merlot, Mari Vineyards produces a wide variety of red wines unlike anything else produced in Michigan.

Gerald did an awesome job of choosing wineries and keeping the group organized on time. You go to 5 different wineries, which is a lot to do in 5 hours! The only recommendation I'd make would be cutting it down to 4 wineries in the amount of time, because we were definitely rushed through a couple of them, based on how the wineries took us through the tasting experience. But we really enjoyed the day and would totally recommend.

All of the wineries visited had high quality wine and even higher quality views. Our two tour guides were the best as well, with great recommendations for things to do around town after the tour. It also didn’t hurt that our group was super fun!!
