Barcolana 2018, a walking tour of Trieste with tales of coffee

Meet your group at 9:30 am at the Barcolana Experience stand for a walk with a guide and discover Trieste. The walking tour will start from Piazza Unità d'Italia, through the Ghetto, you will reach Cavana with its narrow streets and antique shops. Then you will pass through the Arco di Riccardo until you reach the city center between the Saba bookshop and the Curto Bridge.

During the visit, you will be able to stop in a historical place for story-telling and coffee tasting. Built in 1914, the old San Marco cafe has come back to life several times, remaining almost unchanged, as wished by its founder, Marco Lovrinovich. The interior is rich with refined furniture, marbles and stuccos created under the direction of renowned artist, mountaineer and writer Napoleone Cozzi, and it is wonderfully decorated with the paintings of Vito Timmel.

The cafe has always been frequented by artists and intellectuals, such as Timmel, Flumiani, Voghera, Tomizza, Mattioni and Magris. Here, during the Great War, passports were falsified to allow for anti-Austrian patriots to escape. For this reason, on 23rd May 1915 the cafe was devastated and closed by the Habsburg army. It remained closed until the II ° post-war period, when it was taken over and restructured by Assicurazioni Generali. For several years, after being managed several times, including by the Stock sisters, who are often described by Claudio Magris, famous coffee patron, the café was reinvented as a historic cafe, restaurant and bookshop.
