Habsburg Heritage Tour of Trieste

Get picked up at your hotel in Trieste or the port to begin your historic city tour.

Start in Piazza della Libertà, where you can see the statue of Princess Elisabeth of Austria. From here, you will have a walking tour of the city center. Trieste, in the 19th century, was the most important and prosperous port of the Habsburg Monarchy and the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after Vienna, Budapest, and Prague.

Next, climb into the awaiting minivan or car for the transfer to Miramare Castle. This structure is a wonderful example of the Austro-Hungarian 19th-century romanticism almost touching the sea. The rooms of the castle are preserved by their period furnishings. Take a short walk along the park that includes a wide range of botanical species.

Travel back to the heart of Habsburg heritage in the city to see Trieste's Piazza Unità d'Italy, Piazza della Borsa (dominated by the statue of Leopold I), Piazza Sant’Antonia, and the Theresian district, which had a large impact on economic development under the Habsburg Empire.
