About this activity
When your plans are to tour Bali and seeking the les trodden paths but without seeing some of the must-sees, we only can recommend to find yourself among the various contrasts that define Bali in the best way possible. In addition, for that element of uniqueness, this wonderful drive through Bali’s rural parts will be operated with a fully-restored VW Kuebelwagen – a model that has been seen in many movies and still has a certain charm over it. The best way to travel around is with the rooftop down, have your camera in your hand and merely enjoy the ride!
We leave the main roads straight after picking you up in your convertible classic car. The roads are small but still are accessible, even for this fabulous and romantic piece of motorized history. These backroads lead us passing the beauty of the rice terraces along Ubud where the verdant green vegetation almost blends in with the rice fields (season depending). We continue our scenic journey passing Kenderan and Manuaba all the up to the Pura Megening, an important temple in Sebatu. We will make a short stop here. The temple itself is a centre for purification and blessings; it is often that one can see local residents from the district carrying out prayers and perform the Puja Manta – a purification ritual known around the island. After this visit, we follow the road up to the Penelokan and the rim of a large caldera (measuring 14 kilometres across). The Mount Batur will be right there in your sight, with guaranteed breath-taking views up to its 1717-meter high peak.
Excitement waits when we drive downhill via a supply road into the old crater. Vegetation here has grown over former lava flows and surrounded by trees with wild primates dangling on its branches. We park here and climb up one of the small lava dunes where the view over the surroundings is definitely the best available. We go around the mountain and reach Bali’s biggest lake – Lake Batur – which still is a source of water for many southern Balinese communities. En route back to where we came from, we enjoy a good local lunch at a local restaurant. The grounds around volcanic regions tend to be the most ideal land for agriculture and we stop at fruit plantations where we may see local farmers tending to their crop. We end the day with a walk through the village of Desa Petulu before heading back to your hotel.
