According to story, Tirta Gangga was originally built by a king of Karangasem named Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem Agung in 1946. The name “Tirta Gangga” comes from two syllables, namely “Tirta” and “Gangga”. Tirta means holy water, and Ganga is a river name in India. As the name implies, in this tourist place there is a pond containing the holy water in it. To enjoy it, this place also has a swimming bath that you can rent to feel the coolness of natural water, because it is very close to Mount Agung.

Lempuyang Temple is located at the top of Bukit Bisbis or Mount Lempuyang, Karangasem. This temple is one of the oldest temples in Bali. Some even predict that there is already in pre-Hindu-Buddhist era, which was originally a sacred building made of stone. Pura Lempuyang is a place of worship for one of the 9 aspects of Shiva that is known as God Iswara and also worship for Hyang Gni Jaya.
The origin of the word Lempuyang derived from the word "lampu" means light and "hyang" is a word to call God, like Hyang Widhi. From that word, Lempuyang or Lampuyang interpreted the holy light of God who was brightly lit.
