Built on a hill-top on the advice of a meditating hermit, the City Palace is an enthralling marvel of architecture with several halls, palaces and museums on the complex. Constructed of marble and granite, the palace has various gateways including Amar Vilas, Badi Mahal, Chini Chitrashala, Dilkhusha Mahal, Durbar Hall, Sheesh Mahal, and several others. The holy shrine of Lord Jagganath, the 17th century Jagdish Mandir is also located on the City Palace premises. This Indo-Aryan styled temple built by Maharaja Jagat Singh, features walls and towers, offering a glimpse into the life of Lord Vishnu and the apsaras.
