The square was named for Mongolian's revolutionary hero Damdin Sükhbaatar shortly after his death in 1923. In 2013, the Ulaanbaatar City Council changed the name to Chinggis Square in honor of Genghis Khan, considered the founding father of Mongolia. An Administrative Court ordered the name be changed back to Sükhbaatar Square in 2016 after the Mongolian People's Party and decedents of Sükhbaatar sued the city. The center of the square features an equestrian statue of Damdin Sükhbaatar, while a large colonnade monument to Genghis Khan, as well as to Ögedei Khan and Kublai Khan, dominates the square's north side directly in front of the Saaral Ordon (Government Palace).

The National Museum of Mongolia formerly the National Museum of Mongolian History is located in Ulaanbaatar. This museum is a cultural, scientific, and educational organization, which is responsible for the collection, conservation and interpretation of the objects under its curation.

The first museum in Mongolia, the Mongolian National Museum (now the Mongolian Natural History Museum), was established in 1924 and became the basis for other museums, including the National Museum of Mongolian History. Russian scholars, such as Pyotr Kozlov, V. I. Lisovskii, A. D. Simukov, and the American researcher Roy Chapman Andrews contributed to the museum's early collections and exhibits.

Built between 1893 and 1903, this palace is where Mongolia’s eighth Living Buddha, and last king, Jebtzun Damba Hutagt VIII (often called the Bogd Khan), lived for 20 years. For reasons that are unclear, the palace was spared destruction by the Russians and turned into a museum. The summer palace, on the banks of Tuul Gol, was completely destroyed. There are six temples in the grounds; each now contains Buddhist artworks, including sculptures and thangkas.

Visit: Zaisan Memorial, Ulaanbaatar Mongolia

The Zaisan Memorial (Mongolian: Зайсан) is a memorial in the southern area of the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar that honors allied Mongolian and Soviet soldiers killed in World War II. Located on a hill in the southern part of the city, the memorial features a circular memorial painting that depicts scenes of friendship between the people of the USSR and Mongolia. The mural depicts scenes such as Soviet support for Mongolia's independence declaration in 1921, the defeat of the Japanese Kwantung Army by the Soviets at Khalhkin Gol on the Mongolian border in 1939.
