About this activity
You will first drive to the Blue Grotto. The Blue Grotto is actually a number of sea caverns on the southern coast of Malta, west of the Wied iz-Zurrieq harbour and across the small uninhabited islet of Filfla. Everyday from sunrise until about 1300 hrs, a unique sight can be observed here. The cave’s location combined with the sunlight lead to the water mirroring shows numerous shades of blue. Several caverns mirror the brilliant phosphorescent colours of the underwater flora; other caverns show a deep dark shade of blue. If weather permits, you can do a 25 minute boat trip around the caves for an extra cost.

You will then drive to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. Marsaxlokk is a very popular attraction for tourists and locals because fresh fish and seafood caught during the same morning can be bought. The market is very interesting and attractive as many different items are sold. Although the market was originally a fish market, it has developed and now it also sells locally produced honey, fruit jams, wine as well as vegetables, souvenirs and clothes. Free time will be given in this picturesque village.

Blue grotto was a photo stop , for 15 minutes as the coach pulled in and we all got out to take photos....together with several other coaches !!!The market was just a market , extremely busy and you couldn't get a coffee or beer as the cafes would only serve you if you were eating lunch.

This is a half day tour. We couldn't sail to the Blue Grotto as the sea was too rough but saw it from above. The market we found disappointing and just too crowded. Note that the restaurants don't like you to just have a drink at lunch. Marsaxlokk is pretty, especially the boats and the church but there are just too many visitors on market day to really appreciate it.

Because we were staying in old town Valletta, we had to walk 15-min to another hotel for pickup. After about 20 hotel stops over the next hour, we wished they had a central pickup point in the other towns too. The small boats at the Blue Grotto are an additional 8 per person for a 20 minute ride around the rocks. The blue was more visible in pictures than in person. Not as dramatic as the Blue Grotto in Capri, Italy. There was only enough time in Marsaxlokk to browse through the market because it was so crowded. We would have liked more time to have lunch at one of the many seafood cafes around the harbor. Worth a visit but go on your own to fully enjoy a meal there.
