Sarnath is a small town near to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The biggest reason to be famous is the Deer Park, located here, where Gautam Buddha gave the first sermon. The first establishment of Buddhist Union was also done here. Sarnath is deeply related to Buddhism and is one of the four major Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India. 
The great Indian emperor Ashoka built many stupas. He also constructed the famous Ashoka Pillar here and four lions were made on the pillar, today the national symbol of India. Several excavations have been done here since 1907. There are many ancient monuments and structures, which shows the beginning and development of Buddhism in northern India.
