Stop At: Doge's Palace, Piazza San Marco, 1, 30124 Venice Italy

Discover the Doge's Palace, one of the most important symbols of Venice and for centuries, the historical seat of the most important political power of the Serene Venetian Republic.
Meet your professional guide in Saint Mark's Square who will escort you into this magnificent palace, to visit the halls of power, and immerse yourself in medieval Europe, among hundreds of masterpieces.

Dominating Saint Mark's Square, the heart of Venice, the Doge's Palace stands out for its size and its extraordinary structure, where Byzantine, European and Oriental architecture collide. Immediately entering the Palace you will pass through the great courtyard and admire the wealth of detail on the famous Golden Staircase.

Once inside the Palace, you will visit the halls where the Duke (Doge) and his Council controlled the fate of the Serene Republic, whilst surrounded by hundreds of artistic masterpieces and discover the political history of Venice and its people. You will be able to admire the paintings realized by some of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance, amongst them, the world's largest oil painting by Tintoretto.
Passing through the famous Bridge of Sighs, you will reach the new prisons. The bridge was given its name by the English poet Lord Byron, probably referring to the last breath of the prisoners, who had their last view of the lagoon and of Venice from the window of this bridge, before they were to be imprisioned.

The first part of the tour concludes in the courtyard of the Doge's Palace.

We met the tour guide 50 feet from the start of the tour. I presented her with the paperwork to make sure it was my group. There were several groups giving tours in Saint Marks square. She said it was the correct group but we should go back to the start and get a headphone. We walked back there and found no one and the tour guide had left us. There were several thousand people in the square. We went back to the starting point and saw a person with a list and notebook and asked her if she was with the tour agency. She said yes and we told her what happened. She was nice and tried to call but no one answered. She said she had another group at 3 but her standing orders were to not let anyone from the 2:15 group go. We asked her how we could catch up with the group and she told us of an attraction we might see them in. We waited outside the exit for 1 hour to see if we could catch them. There were two opportunities to fix this problem. First the tour guide could have allowed us to go along without the headphones, We could have still experienced the attractions. The second opportunity was to allow us to go with the next group or at least see if the was room for us after all it was a walking tour. We travel over 5000 miles on a once in a lifetime trip only to be denied the tour we were looking forward to. Michael Hale

Overall, we enjoyed it. I'm usually really good about getting private tours because my parents tire easily and don't like to impact the pace of a large group or get left behind. I thought this was a private tour so was disappointed when I realized it very much wasn't. Nevertheless, the guide was engaging, knowledgeable, and entertaining. The way the gondola ride at the end is managed is pretty chaotic. I recommend trying to have 6 people in a group or get your group to 6 to get on a gondola faster. Also, be ready to not sit beside the person you want to sit beside because not everyone sits beside someone and they decide how to distribute the weight as needed.
