History
Doge’s Palace is a Venetian masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Located in the heart of the city, just off Piazza San Marco, it is one of the most beautiful sights of the Venetian panorama seen from the waters of St. Mark’s Basin. All of Venice’s history and culture seems to have been wrapped up in this one landmark site. It was once not just the seat of government but also the residence of the doge of Venice, adding to the intrigue to the history behind the palace. Besides the magnificently decorated interiors with works by Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo, and Tintoretto, there is also a hidden side most don’t see like its dark dungeons and prisons. Many visitors enjoy access to fascinating parts of Doge’s Palace during secret itineraries tour. The palace also contains law courts, interrogation rooms, and prisons. Subsequently New Prisons were built on the other side of the Rio di Palazzo canal adjacent to Doge’s Palace. The Palace halls were connected to the New Prisons with the construction of the legendary Bridge of Sighs. This covered bridge with its small barred windows allowed inquisitors of the state to easily reach the New Prisons.
Don’t’ let your Venetian experience end here. Included in our Doge's Palace advance tickets is entry to Museo Correr, a step inside the 19th century with its exquisite Napoleonic-era rooms and art by masters including Antonio Canova. Then there is Museo Archeologico Nazionale, a fine collection of Greek and Roman antiquities as well as Egyptian, Babylonian, and Assyrian artifacts. Lastly, are the Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. This library was built in the 16th century by Jacopo Sansovino to house an incredible collection of ancient Greek and Roman manuscripts. The Great Hall of the library is covered by an impressive vaulted ceiling with 21 medallion paintings created by late Renaissance Venetian masters including Titian, Paolo Veronese, and Sansovino.
