About this activity
In Venice's Cannaregio district, meet your guide and embark on your food walking tour of one of the city's most charming and historic areas, which has been featured in The Merchant of Venice film starring Al Pacino. As you explore, learn about the Jewish ghetto's rich culture and luxurious food traditions.

Although an English word, 'ghetto' originates from a Venetian term that is now used by people all over the world. Discover the delights of the ghetto as you visit six restaurants to sample local foods, including Italian gelato. Your tour takes you across the ghetto and Cannaregio, which is home to an abundance of canals, Gothic churches, dainty bridges, and more. Walk along the streets and squares of the old ghetto (Gheto Vecio), and listen to interesting facts from your guide to enhance your experience.

See the rabbi’s house and historic synagogues (outside), and taste traditional Jewish-Venetian dishes like Sarde al Saor and artichoke bottoms, which are lovingly accompanied by fine kosher wine. Plus, take a leisurely and informative stroll along the romantic walkways known as fondamenta.

On the other side of Rialto, the oldest bridge out of 400 in Venice, indulge your taste buds with risotto and pasta at places where local gondoliers and residents love to eat. Then visit an old bakery where you will be served Venetian-Jewish biscuits and cakes. During your walk along the alleyways, take in enchanting views of Venice at night with its churches standing out against the canals, and sip Italian sparkling wine.

This tour combines art, culture, historical information, and food and wine tastings. For good measure, it is recommended that you come hungry, as you’ll be leaving full and replenished.

Ok...first things first: my wife and I were the only two on the tour so what started out as a group tour ended up being a private tour. Wow - how lucky was that! We had Sylvia's full attention and she played the biggest part in making this a five star experience. She was extremely knowledgeable not just about the food part of the tour but also the local history and culture - all of which she gladly shared with us. We really enjoyed her company and sense of humour - it felt like being out with a friend. The food was excellent and abundant...a light lunch is all you'll need if you're doing this tour. A great experience!! Thanks Sylvia - you're awesome.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Monica. She was very knowledgeable and provided first hand "colour" as to the history in Venice. The restaurants / bars that were chosen for our progressive meal were authentic and enjoyable. Overall, a great tour.

This is really two tours. One is a short walk through the old Jewish Ghetto. Maybe 30 – 45 minutes. Our guide was excellent. I think his name was ‘Michaela’. That said, if you want to do a Jewish Ghetto tour the best way is to visit the Jewish Museum in the Ghetto and they take you inside a few synagogues in area and explain the ghetto area. If you can’t visit the Jewish Museum during the day, then this night time option through this vendor is fine too. We enjoyed the ‘food tour’. It is really a visit to 5 eateries over 4 hours. Basically, you start with appetizers, then cheese and wine, then pasta and end with gelato. Along the way you get a private tour of Venice. We finished near the Rialto Bridge and started in the Jewish Ghetto. The food tour is not kosher, and really not related to the Ghetto. The first stop for us was in the ghetto. We enjoyed our time and it was a great way to taste the foods of Italy. The guide asked us about dietary issues at every stop. Our guide was excellent but the tour operator rotates guides.

This was an enjoyable and informative tour to learn about the Jewish Ghetto and tour that area. The food was nice but not quite the native tastes I had hoped for. The tour guide was knowledgeable and the food/wine stops were generous. I would definitely recommend this tour but others may provide a more in-depth exposure to authentic Venetian food.

There was a great variety of food. The order in which we ate the food was not great and I wish I would have known the order of what we were eating ahead of time,

We arrived in Venice in the early afternoon so we decided to introduce ourselves to the city with a food tour! Our choice was excellent. The Jewish Ghetto tour served up lots of great tasting food and wine. Our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Our group was diverse, sociable and interesting. The Jewish history was very informative. We ended the evening with smiles and FULL stomachs...highly recommend!

Alicia was, by far, the most enthusiastic guide we had on our 2 week trip. She is steeped in Venice history, and all the eateries we stopped at were enjoyable -- food and wine were tasty and the views of "inner Venice" were quaint. All in all, way better than the typical tourist trap. I woudl definitely do this tour again!

We did this tour on 01July18, it was a fantastic time. Our guide Lucia, was simply great. During the tour we visited 5 great restaurants along with learning about the history of the ghetto. We went back to several of the restaurants later in the week because they were so good. It was one of our favorite activities during our trip to Venice. Kyle and Christi Captain West Virginia, USA

We loved this. I highly recommend this. We were both interested in Jewish history so this was perfect. Combining it with food was creative. They really took us to hole in the wall type places that locals would know and the food tasting was well worth it. Go hungry as you WILL be eating a lot.
