About this activity
The tour starts with a historical introduction of St. Mark’s Square, and its architectural delights, allowing you to discover the history of the majestic St. Mark’s Basilica, the illustrious Doge’s Palace, once the seat of the power of the Republic of Venice, and the extraordinary, renaissance clock tower.
Leaving the square, you will be guided inside the Correr museum, located in the former Palazzo Reale in Piazza San Marco and comprising the Ala Napoleonica and the Procuratie Nuove, the Correr museum is a combination of history, venetian art and culture.
The museum originated with the collection that Teodoro Correr bequeathed to the city in 1830. A keen art collector and coming from a noble Venetian family, he dedicated much of his life to amassing works of art, documents and objects that reflected the history of Venice.
The museum is laid out in various sections, with the first occupying the Napoleonic Wing, a 19th-century kings and emperors’ palace; here the magnificent Neoclassical Rooms house a remarkable collection of works by the great sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822).
The next rooms are the Procuratie Nuove, planned by the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi (1552-1616). The large rooms contain collections documenting numerous aspects of Venetian History – from naval achievements to local festivities, from daily life to public institutions.
The Art Collection begins beyond these rooms and continues on the upper floor where visitors can find a rich art collection from the earliest days of Venetian painting to the 16th century with works by artists like Antonello da Messina, Giovanni Bellini, Alvise Vivarini, Lorenzo Lotto and Vittore Carpaccio.
