THE VENETIAN GHETTO
2 h
About this activity
In 1516, the Republic of Venice decided that all Jews residing in the city would have to live and work on its outskirts. From dawn ‘til dusk, the gates to the Jewish quarter were locked, giving birth to the world’s first ghetto. Five hundred years later, the ghetto is a charming, bustling part of town, where a dynamic Jewish community runs a museum and five different synagogues. The ghetto is also home to several kosher restaurants and bakeries and to a wide range of cultural activities.
Join us and gain an insight into the stories of the families forced to live in this district. Ponder why the ghetto’s buildings are so much taller than homes in other parts of the city, and catch a glimpse of the oldest synagogues, which are tucked amidst venerable Venetian homes.
