About this activity
Meet up with your guide and small group in Venice's Sestiere of Cannaregio, home of the Jewish ghetto, the first one for Jews in Europe. It’s here where the word “ ghetto” first originated. This remote area was where Venice’s Jewish population were forced to live from the 16th century until the late 18th century when Napoleon lifted the restrictions on their movements. Aside from its historic interest, Il Ghetto is also one of the less touristy neighborhoods in Venice (though it is becoming somewhat of a nightspot) and is a pleasant place for a stroll.

Chance upon the typical high buildings and low ceilings of the ghetto; walk along the streets and squares of the old and new ghetto and listen to interesting facts from your guide to enhance your experience.

Stop over the façades of the synagogues, easily recognizable from their windows and still houses of pray for the Jews community.

Walk along Ormesini fondamenta street, where you can still enjoy a real slice of genuine Venetian life. It is not rare finding out those typical clotheslines hanging over the side canal. Pass by the Neoclassical Mary Magdalene Church rebuilding over top of the medieval church.

Cross the Ponte Chiodo ( or the Nail Bridge) one of the few bridges in Venice with no handrails and learn about the Scuola grande della Misericordia ("Old School of Mercy") a former charity building in Venice dominating the north side of Venice. A unique building of its kind, that after a restoration once again serves the city, reviving its ancient vocation of hospitality, with a modern approach ( external visit ).

Last stop, in Campo Sant’Apostoli, is a gourmet Italian gelateria, specialized in handmade vast variety of frozen treats, produced with local and seasonal ingredients. Why settle for one ice cream flavor when you can try 6?

The Venetian Jewish Ghetto tour was one of the best tours during our 7 days stay in Venice. Our tour guide Alessandra had a deep, detailed knowledge of the history of Jewish settlement in Venice. She explained to us not only the time line and statistical facts about the jewish population, but also how jews were integrated into Venetian environment from the beginning of the Venice to the modern times. Alessandras knowledge about Ghetto and the Cannaregio district where the Ghetto is located was very impressive. She answered all our questions and we learned a lot of new facts about the Jewish life in Venice. We hope that this tour will continue to be available since we are going to send our friends and our kids to get the same experience as we got it with Alessandra. And the gelato tasting was a great treat and fun at the end, with the story about Francesco Procopio, the Italian inventor of sorbet.

This tour was incredibly interesting for the history content it has. Alessandra, our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the jewish ghetto and explained everything in a nuanced and in depth fashion. Alessandra was patient with our questions and easy going and really fun too! The ice-cream tasting at the end was absolutely delicious!

It was in fact a private tour, just for us. The guide, Alexandra, was great, she started to offer this shorter two hours tour recently, but the tour starts in winter almost by night, at 5:00 pm, and the Jewish Ghetto just started to awake after the Shabbat Saturday, and naturally the synagogues were closed for visitors. The whole tour, including the Cannaregio district was amazing, and we finished it with a Gelato Ice Cream tasting two big cups. We highly recommend it.
