The construction of the Basilica of St. Mark was completed in 1092, and is an important example of Italo-Byzantine and Gothic architecture. It is known as the “Church of Gold” for its golden decorations and ornaments, especially mosaics, that adorn the facade. For its Byzantine elements it gives the Basilica an Oriental feeling, blended with an Italian touch

The Doge’s Palace was initially built in the 800s but then destroyed due to a fire. It was then rebuilt in the 1340s and remains as it was to this day. It is of Gothic architecture and is considered one of Venice’s main landmarks. It was built as the residence of the Doge, the supreme authority of the former Venetian Republic, and today is the site of a museum, including the hidden treasures and passageways of the Doge.
