The market in the centre Victoria – known officially as the Sir Selwyn Selwyn Clarke Market, but more widely as the Victoria Market – is truly the heart of the capital. Discover everything there is know about this magnificent market. Built in 1840 and later renovated in 1999, Victoria Market is a great example of blending the old and new Seychellois way of life. It’s always been great place to buy local fruit, vegetables, spices and fish; a good sign of this is that it’s always busy with Seychellois doing their food shopping.

The National Museum of History was established in 1964. The museum is charged with the acquisition, preservation and exhibition of historical artifacts for the public benefit. Exhibits illustrating the history of Seychelles include such items as the oldest map drawn in 1517, the Stone of Possession, the world’s smallest statuette of Queen Victoria, and objects of ethnographical interest that exemplify the traditions and modes of life in times gone past.

Botanical Gardens: Established in 1901 by a Mauritian agronomist, Rivalz Dupont, the 15-acre garden is one of the Seychelles’ oldest national monuments and is a living green heritage providing a quiet, green getaway with a 20-minutes walk from the busy town centre. The garden has developed into one of Victoria’s main tourist attractions. The first thing to greet you as you enter the gardens is the sight of the biggest nut in the world -- the coco de mer. In 1956 Duke of Edinburg planted the most fruitful Coco de mer palm in the Botanical Gardens.
