Stop At: Alte Donau, Vienna 1220 Austria
We'll be investigating arguably the most quaint part of Vienna, the Alte Donau; a lakeside village which was cut off from the main channel of the Danube in 1870. This is where nocturnal beavers now roam in an old side arm of the grand river. We'll see how Vienna maintains its long-established reputation as a centre for diplomacy, politics and international relations as we paddle past the United Nations, along with several of the city's other most important contemporary buildings. This is later contrasted with the cute lakeside huts which adorn the water's edge to give vibrant bursts of colour to the lakeshore. We'll most likely be sharing the water with local rowers, the odd fisherman, and plenty of swans and ducks along the way! The Alte Donau is a watery oasis in the middle of the city, perfectly designed for further investigation via kayak.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Copa Beach, Vienna 1220 Austria
The New Danube is an equally calm stretch of water that runs parallel to the main river channel & its barges and cruise ships (they're separated by Vienna's most famous recreational spot - the 'Danube Island'). This is where the local Viennese come out to play in summertime ;-) The tour ends at approx 12:30 close to the 'Donauinsel' u-bahn station (U1 red line), and from here it's just 10 minutes back to the city centre. If you wanted to keep investigating 'new' Vienna for a bit longer though, you could grab lunch or a cocktail at Vienna's self-styled 'Copa Beach', swim off one of the island's riverside pontoons, visit the Danube Tower with its 360 views over Vienna's skyline, or explore the charming Danube Park, all within walking distance.
