Suggested Itinerary

We begin our tour at the Romanesque Ruprechtskirche, Vienna's oldest church, situated in the most ancient part of the city and overlooking the Danube Canal. Passing through the area once settled by the Romans, and that later became the governmental and commercial center of the medieval city, we come to the church of Maria am Gestade, one of the city's few truly Gothic structures, with a remarkable open-work tower. Passing through the tightly compact area once inhabited by the Babenburg court, our walk takes us to Freyung, an area of rich, 18th century palaces recently restored. Here we can see layered over the previous court and the Roman city the aesthetic of a great imperial power: the Habsburgs. While many of the streets of first district are quiet, close and narrow, the Habsburgs carved out an entire area of imperial display, building an astonishing architecture of their wealth and power. Our path will take us briefly along the famous Ringstrasse, past the huge structures of Habsburg authority, where the Parliament building abuts the grounds of the great imperial palace, the Hofburg. We may even stop to restore ourselves with a torte and a coffee in the time-warp that is a Viennese cafe. Our walk ends at the Stephansdom, Vienna's cathedral, an architectural marvel of Gothic design, and the icon of the city's centuries of survival in the midst of political and religious upheaval.
