Nam Ngum Lake Day Trip from Vientiane

About this activity
Be ready in the morning for pickup from your centrally located Vientiane hotel. Your guide and driver will take you on a scenic drive north to Nam Ngum Lake. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the 55-mile (90-km) trip takes roughly 1.5 hours.
Stop along the way at Vang Xang, a small archaeological site built in the 11th century. See a selection of Buddha images, many of them still in their original state, on display. The site's picturesque location along a small river makes it an ideal break en route to your oft-overlooked destination.
Late in the morning, you'll arrive at Nam Ngum Reservoir for lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the lake. Listen to your guide describe the preservation efforts for this favorite weekend and holiday getaway for residents from the capital. Hear about the dam and its use as a hydroelectric power station for the country and surrounding Indochina neighbors. Initially part of the Nam Ngum River, the lake now covers 100 square miles (250 square km).
Next, take a 1-hour trip on the pristine waters of the lake aboard a traditional boat before it is time to make your way back to Vientiane. After disembarkation, you'll drive back via a southern route to include a final stop at Ban Keun (near Phou Khao Khoauy). Here, learn how the local community uses authentic means to glean salt from the ground water.
